A couple of weeks ago I was invited down to Pizza Express* in Basildon to try out their new Spring/Summer menu. I love pizza (actually I just love food) so was obviously like an excitable child and couldn't wait to try. I took the lovely Penny from lilliesandlove.co.uk with me and we had a great little natter over some super delicious food.
For my main course I went with one of the new pizzas from the Spring/Summer menu, the Pollo Forza Romana. Quoted from the menu it's a 'A fiery pizza; chicken marinated smokey chilli powder, garlic and dried chilli flakes with chargrilled red and yellow peppers, roquito peppers, mozzarella and tomato, finished with Gran Moravia cheese, parsley and chilli oil'.
This pizza was spicy but I thought it was well balanced. I think it was just the right strength of hotness, but I like spicy foods, so for some people this might blow their heads off. I did however pick off the roquito peppers as even they were too hot for me. There wasn't a shortage of any toppings and had plenty of chicken, it was very yummy and I would definitely get it again.
Penny went for the healthy option which was the Leggera Superfood Salad and it looked extremely good. Ingredients quoted from the menu are 'Baby spinach and seasonal mixed leaves, roasted butternut squash, beetroot, light baby mozzarella, avocado, pine kernels, cucumber, lentils and fresh basil finished with balsamic vinegar'. She asked for it to come with chicken, which I would have done too.
When it arrived we couldn't believe how big it was, the picture doesn't do it justice as it was honestly massive. I think it came on the same sized plate as the pizzas. It looked really appetizing and filling for a salad and the selection of ingredients were seasonal for spring/summer which I think is great. Penny said it was tasty and she enjoyed it very much.
Penny also order a side order of Polenta chips for us to try. These are 'Italian polenta with rosemary, twice baked and finished with Gran Moravia cheese, served with honey and mustard dressing' as stated on the menu. These were really nice and a good alternative to normal potato chips, probably a lot better on the carb situation. They were really soft and fluffy inside and did taste close to potatoes, its hard to explain what they actually tasted like but definitely give it a try.For dessert both me and Penny were swayed by the Chocolate fudge cake and we were not disappointed. It was amazing, soft, squishy, warm, chocolately, creamy, moist... I could list adjectives forever! Served with creamy vanilla ice cream and a strawberry it was the perfect end to our meal. Just looking at that photo now is making me salivate!
We were very impressed with the service we received from Pizza Express, the waitress was so friendly and extremely helpful, and she didn't even know we were there for a review! The food came in good time, presentation was good and I can't fault a thing.
Thanks for reading
